SRI LANKA

the last stop on my epic around-the-world in three weeks trip was the amazing island of sri lanka.  i spent a lot of time in colombo and find it crazy that the economist, which i must add i love and respect, listed it as the 10th worst city in the world to live in.  it did not seem that terrible to me!  it was relatively clean (considering i arrived after spending over a week in india) and i felt safe all the time (though there were tons of soldiers around carrying what looked like ak47's and i did have my first experience with military checkpoints) so i'm not really sure how it got 10th.

sri lanka was awesome.  the scenery was beautiful, the people friendly, and the food delicious.

colombo sunset

i loved this, completely empty building and storefront except these creepy mannequins wearing dresses

the hotel

it was a nice change from the business hotels we were staying at earlier in the trip.  this beautifully lit tree was right next to the pool bar which made nights at the hotel done with emails feel more like vacation than work.

fancy dinners with wine were like $30/$40 - ridiculous

waiter, "sir, did you enjoy your dessert?"
me, "yes, i will take another."
waiter, "excuse me?"
me, "i want another one."

inappropriate dinner conversation leads to spitting wine everywhere, oops

the "official" beer of sri lanka

i got put in a traditional sri lankan lungi and we decided to have an impromptu photoshoot, do werq

making tyra proud

i thought it was a bit long but the sri lankans said it was fine.  i think they were just having a laugh at me.  it's sliming don't you think?

miuccia have you been here decorating bus stops?

words can't describe this cashew, curry leaf, and onion combination.  probably the best thing i ate during the entire three weeks.

lunch on the beach one

cute stray friend who was actually extremely picky with what you fed him.

the fishing boats of negombo

coconuts!  in sri lanka they are yellowish and called king coconuts.  they cost about $.10/$.20 and are absolutely amazing.  i miss having several of these a day.

t-shirt - james perse
shorts - customized urbn pants

it actually was a mercedes, they didn't just paint it to say it was.  pretty much all trucks/buses in sri lanka (and india as well) are painted.  they come in all sorts from this colorful scheme which is quite normal...

to this majestic painting of dragons and knights...just bizarre

the gorgeous beach of negombo that we were lucky enough to be able to spend an afternoon sunning on which turned into an evening eating on which then turned into a night drinking on during which i got eaten alive by mosquitos.

lunch on the beach two

steamed veggies - delicous
potato wedges - wow
coconut shrimp - words can't describe

enjoying the indian ocean while it is snowing and zero degrees back home

next time i'm going back for more than a day in negombo, it is one of the most beautiful places i have ever been to.

INDIA

india is one of those places that has to be experienced; the sights, sounds, and smells are unlike anywhere else.  to try to do the country and its people justice through images or description would be naive - it just can't be done.  this was my second time to india and it was just as amazing and humbling as the first time.

bangalore, india

view from my room

daily breakfast in the sun while it was snowing and zero degrees at home

surprisingly empty streets, normally this would be covered and you would not be able to see or thing or move

how some people on two wheelers deal with the insane traffic

little temples and shrines are everywhere

beer at lunch?  yes, please!

i am tsunami, don't follow me

please sir, i invite you to walk through the cave to reach the restaurant you are seeking

one of my favorite things on earth - sunday brunch at the leela palace

shirt - band of outsiders
shorts - diesel
shoes - sperry
sunglasses - lanvin <3 h&m

and just when i was least expecting it i ran directly into my biggest vice

fyi - an hour or two in the morning sun in bangalore india is definitely not like an hour or two in the morning sun in the middle of america.

sun poisoning

some shots from the factory where your clothes are made

what i wouldn't do for an afternoon break with a coconut, impossible to find here

next stop, colombo sri lanka
